New Wings Forums

  • This thread will be a catch-all that will be used to publish news regarding our RoF game servers.

  • Fellow RoF Pilots,

I'm writing today to make the community aware of a serious situation that has been detected with our Wargrounds server and the actions we are taking to deal with it. Approximately a year ago, some community members discovered an exploit that could allow an unscrupulous pilot to log into any RoF server with different settings than those intended by the operator and mission designer. Realizing the severity of this issue, it was tested, and documented, and the full details of that study were forwarded to Jason and his development team for review, and hopefully a fix. Unfortunately, Jason's response was that the issue would not be addressed at all. For obvious reasons, knowledge of the exploit was kept as quiet as was possible, but there was little doubt at that point that it was only a matter of time before it would be discovered and used to cheat.

It is my sad duty today to inform the community that we have conclusive proof that a very small number of pilots from two different squadrons have, in fact, used that exploit on our Wargrounds server (and possibly other servers as well) during the first couple months of 2018. Over the past week or so, I've run several scripts against our stats tables. These scripts examine a substantial number of variables associated with pilot sorties and aircraft, and there is absolutely no doubt about the findings.

I cannot begin to express my level of disappointment in these few individuals who have chosen to act in such a shameless way. Certainly, some responsibility for this situation lies with Jason and his team for ignoring a definite, documented flaw with their product, but ultimately the true onus lies with those few pilots who elected to exploit that flaw for their own benefit. Personally, my feeling is that they should be permanently banned from our server. However, in discussing the matter with our NW Staff, we have decided initially to take a slightly more optimistic stance to begin with in the hope that these pilots will realize the seriousness of their actions and amend their behavior accordingly.

With that consideration in mind, the 4 pilots involved will be banned from Wargrounds for a period of one month beginning March 1st, 2018. Additionally, their names will be shared with the other server owners who run "full real" events (Cuban's Syndicate, FiF, Bloody April, etc.) It will be up to those owners to determine how they wish to deal with these pilots on their servers.

Finally, the two squadrons represented by these individuals will be observed with substantially more scrutiny, and any further violations of this sort will be met with permanent bans.

I want to make it completely clear that New Wings will not condone or tolerate this sort of chicanery on our servers, and given that we now have scripts in place that can detect this behavior on Wargrounds, violators can rest assured they will be caught and dealt with appropriately going forward. It is my sincere hope that pilots will reconsider very carefully the use of this (or any other) exploit and make the proper decision to decline such behavior.

  • Tough news, but thanks FourSpeed!

  • Appalling!

Would it be possible to share the detection scripts with the other server operators?

  • I'll be involved in a TS meeting tomorrow with some of the other server operators, and I expect that will be one of the topics of discussion.

  • Ok I'm going to see if I can get some people to join on a Tuesnight flyin I hope you all can join and have some fun in ROF WG NW server stay safe.

  • As of tonight, there may be some VERY BAD news...

I'm *hoping* that this is nothing other than a network glitch that will be fixed.

However, on the surface, it looks an awful lot like 777 just pulled the plug and deep-sixed ROF.

The forums, website and game sign-in appear to be unavailable, and the game throws a script error when trying to start.

Additionally, it looks like the entire domain has expired.

I have a post up in the BoS Forums, so we'll see what they have to say (if anything), but it doesn't look very good to me... frown

  • It looks like 777 got their domain issue resolved and all of our RoF Servers are back up and running again..
